MISS DYONNA who states that this garment is inspired by a conch shell, which, in my cultural history of the Virgin Islands, signifies the call to freedom. I wanted the design of this dress to feel very strong yet somewhat liberating. The base/foundation of this garment is a one-shoulder tank one piece made with a nylon/spandex blend. The grand 2-layered piece is constructed onto the one-shoulder. The two layers of pre-starched-stiff materials (pre-soaked and stiffened with a home-made starch) spiral out from the right bust and are constructed with hidden wire fore extra hold. The material is starched-stiff up to a certain point and gradually falls into loose pleats providing movement for the right arm, which is made possible with an attached finger loop on the dress. The inner layer of the garment (pink material) will be a silk or satin material, representing the pink pearl that can be found in the shell and the outer layer (tan material) would be batiste. The original design/pattern on both tan materials will be created using a rust-dying technique. This garment would sell for $800.
